How do I register a provincial dot-ca domain?

Provincial dot-ca domains are domains that end with the extensions .ab.ca, .bc.ca, .mb.ca, .nb.ca, .nl.ca, .ns.ca, .nt.ca, .nu.ca, .on.ca, .pe.ca, .qc.ca, .sk.ca or .yt.ca. They represent all the Canadian provinces and territories. There are 3 scenarios for the registration of a provincial domain name:

i) If the domain "xyz.ca" is not registered, you can register the domain "xyz.prov.ca" directly through our website. Please click on "register a domain" on the left menu and click on the "multiple domains" tab. Once there, you can enter the desire domain name "xyz.prov.ca" and complete the check out process as usual.

ii) If "xyz.ca" is registered to Registrant A, then only Registrant A is allowed to register "xyz.prov.ca" according to CIRA rules. If it is your intention to register "xyz.prov.ca", you should first attempt to contact the registrant to negotiate a verbal consent as a first step. You can find the registrant's contact information from the official CIRA WHOIS at http://whois.cira.ca/public. Alternatively, you can use the CIRA 3rd party contact form at https://registrants.cira.ca/message/delivery/en instead. Once you have reached an agreement with the registrant, please send us a ticket via our online support system with the following information:

Action = Conflicting domain registration

Scenario = 2

Verbal consent = YES/NO

Provincial domain requested =

We will then provide you with more information on how to proceed and initiate the technical process. Registrant A will be required to authorize the registration of "xyz.prov.ca" via his/her own CIRA Registrant account. This is called a Conflicting Domain Registration.

iii) If you are the owner of "xyz.ca" and you wish to register "xyz.prov.ca", please send us a ticket via our online support system with the following information:

Action = Conflicting domain registration

Scenario = 3

Provincial domain requested =

We will then provide you with more information on how to proceed and set up your Namespro.ca account accordingly.

Note

In scenario 2, the reason why a verbal consent is recommended before the official technical process is initiated is because seldom would a registrant confirm this type of registration without any communication in advance with the requesting user. From our experience, early communication would minimize any chance of confusion and misunderstanding.
