How do I transfer a dot-ca domain from one registrant to another? Under CIRA (the dot-ca registry) rules, dot-ca domains cannot be moved freely between registrants. There are 2 options under CIRA rules to bring dot-ca domains from one registrant to another:
i) CIRA registrant merger option
 | | This is a free operation. It merges 2 CIRA registrants together and brings ALL of the domains from the losing registrant to the receiving registrant. |
ii) CIRA registrant transfer option
 | | This operation allows the transfer of any single dot-ca domain from one registrant to another. The domain will be extended for 1 year by CIRA after the transfer, which means the associated cost for this operation is equivalent to 1 year of registration ($12.88). |
To decide between the 2 options, the only determining factor is whether ALL of the domains under the same registrant are to be transferred. If this is the case or if there is only 1 domain under the registrant, then option 1 is suitable. Otherwise, option 2 would be the only choice. Once a decision has been made, the process is as follows:
| 1) | User first creates a receiving Namespro.ca account at http://www.namespro.ca/NewAccount.asp. (User can skip this step and use an existing Namespro.ca account where the domain is to be managed from.) |
| 2) | User creates a receiving CIRA registrant profile by following steps a to g below. (User can skip this step if the receiving CIRA registrant already exists.) |
 | a. | Log into the receiving Namespro.ca account. |
 | b. | Click on the "register a domain" tab on the left menu. |
 | c. | Search for a dummy dot-ca domain (such as asdfasdf1234567.ca) and add the domain to your shopping cart. |
 | d. | Continue the process by clicking on the "checkout" button. |
 | e. | Choose "new registrant" to create a new registrant profile, which will receive the domain name. |
 | f. | Create the CIRA registrant accordingly. The registrant name must be a legal name and it must corresponds to the CIRA registrant type selected. For example, if the type "Canadian Citizen" is selected, the registrant name and the admin contact name would be the same as the one that appears on the user's Canadian passport. If the type "Corporation" is selected, the registrant name would be the name of the incorporated company and the admin contact would be the person responsible. |
 | g. | Stop at the payment page (you do not wish to actually register the dummy domain). |
| 3) | Once step 1 and 2 are complete, the user can send us a ticket via our online support system with the following information depending on the choice of option: |
 | | For the CIRA registrant merger option: |
 | | Action = dot-ca domains movement |
 | | Option = CIRA registrant merger |
 | | Losing registrant name = |
 | | Losing registrant admin e-mail address = |
 | | Receiving Namespro.ca account e-mail = |
 | | Receiving registrant name = |
 | | Receiving registrant admin e-mail address = |
 | | For the CIRA registrant transfer option: |
 | | Action = dot-ca domains movement |
 | | Option = CIRA registrant transfer |
 | | Domain(s) involved = |
 | | Receiving Namespro.ca account e-mail = |
 | | Receiving registrant name = |
 | | Receiving registrant admin e-mail address = |
| 4) | We then evaluate the request and initiate the corresponding process. The user will provide payment for the CIRA registrant transfer in this step if necessary. More instructions will also be provided in your ticket on how to proceed. For your reference, the steps to approve a CIRA registrant merger are listed in KB-1010, and the steps to approve a CIRA registrant transfer are in KB-1009. |
| 5) | When the CIRA registrant merger or the CIRA registrant transfer is complete, the user's Namespro.ca account will be updated accordingly. |
Note
 | If Namespro.ca is not currently the registrar for the domain(s) in question, it is necessary to first perform a registRAR transfer to bring it under our management. Please refer to KB-1001 for more instructions on how to perform a registRAR transfer. Once the registRAR transfer is complete, the steps in this KB article can then be executed. |
